Frequently Asked Questions

Attendance Allowance – FAQs
What is Attendance Allowance?
Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help or supervision due to illness or disability. It helps with extra costs, even if you don’t have a carer.
Who can claim Attendance Allowance?
You may qualify if you:
-
Are State Pension age or over
-
Have a long-term physical or mental health condition
-
Need help with personal care or supervision
-
Have needed this help for at least 6 months (unless terminally ill)
Do I need a carer to qualify?
No. You do not need a carer or to be receiving help. It’s based on what help you need, not what you get.
What kind of help counts?
This includes help with washing, dressing, eating, taking medication, getting in or out of bed, or supervision to stay safe (for example due to falls, confusion, or memory problems), during the day, night, or both.
How much is Attendance Allowance?
There are two rates:
Lower rate 2026/27:
help needed during the day or night - £76.70 per week
Higher rate 2026/27:
help needed during the day and night - £114.60 per week
Attendance allowance is usually paid into your bank account every 4 weeks.
Is Attendance Allowance means-tested?
No. Your income, savings, and property do not affect your claim.
Will it affect other benefits?
It usually does not reduce other benefits and can increase entitlement to Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, or Carer’s Allowance for someone who cares for you.
Can I claim if I live alone or with others?
Yes. Living alone or with family does not affect eligibility. You usually cannot claim if you live in a care home paid for by the local authority.
Do I need a medical diagnosis?
No. What matters is how your condition affects your daily life, not the diagnosis itself.
How do I apply?
You apply by completing a DWP paper form yourself, or by using our service to help achieve a successful claim. The form is long and many people find it daunting to do on their own, so they choose to get help from The Benefit Assistant to complete it.
Why are some claims refused?
Claims are often refused because forms lack detail, focus on good days or difficulties are underestimated.
Can I appeal if my claim is refused?
Yes. You can request a mandatory reconsideration and appeal if needed. Many decisions are changed.
Can someone help me apply?
Yes. The Benefit Assistant is a great way to help you and ease your stress. You can also ask a friend or family member to apply on your behalf.
Is Attendance Allowance taxable?
No. It is tax-free.
How long does a decision take?
Decisions usually take about 12 weeks but on occasion they do take up to 16 weeks. Payments are backdated to when you first applied. Successful claims are backdated and paid according to the date that your completed form was received at the DWP.
Can I check if I’m eligible?
Yes. You can get a free benefits check to see if you qualify for Attendance Allowance or other benefits.
